Have you ever thought about all of the places Linux has been popping up lately? It's not just in your computer anymore. Linux is powering mobile phones, handheld gaming consoles, GPS systems, e-book readers, and more. Personally, I'm waiting for the Linux refrigerator, the Ubuntu frigidaire, which will be fast, cold, and powerful enough to churn out ice cubes like there's no tomorrow. Unfortunately, this article isn't about the next generation of refrigerators, but it is about another common household electronic device that we use everyday: our television set. Asus, creator of the world popular Eee laptop, has made the announcement that they will be pushing out three new products, one of which is a Linux-powered TV.

That's right folks, Linux is on the March again! Why is Windows being dealt such harsh blows? Why don't people trust Microsoft? Well it's simple really – Windows and Microsoft make the least secure software on the planet. Do you really think any agency that needed to be secured would be using Windows? China is one of the fastest growing nations on the Earth, and Red Hat Inc. is taking advantage of that fact. Red Hat, the Linux and open-source distributor, is focusing on the continent of Asia, expecting gains of more than 50% in growth. The Linux company is planning on opening up eight new testing centers in China in the next six months in order to capture revenue growth. Open Source and Linux are gaining huge grounds all over the world; it might be at the United States' detriment that its North Carolina-based company is focusing so heavily on the Chinese market.

The French paramilitary police force made the announcement that they will be removing all Microsoft systems and replacing them with systems running the open source Linux operating system. This is one of the largest government organizations to completely devout themselves to switching to Linux. The police force had already moved away from such applications as Microsoft Office to the popular open source alternative, openoffice.org (learn more about alternatives to Microsoft and other proprietary software here).

Dell is expanding even further into the Linux market. Dell made the announcement that it will now be selling the Dell XPS 1330n with Ubuntu Linux 7.10 preloaded to customers in the UK, Germany, France, and Spain. This is in addition to the Inspiron 530n PC, which was previously released to those countries. This move comes after it was clear from customer feedback that Linux was in high demand in these countries.
