The New Topyli Standard: "This article is a humble opinion piece of a GNOME user who wishes to stop using communication software and just be in touch with people. I want to write mail to, chat with, talk to, and have video conferences with real people without worrying about applications and technology."

Pissed TuxGoogle announced it is ready to stop Microsoft from taking over Yahoo by offering Yahoo money or guaranteed revenue in return for an advertising pact. However all the deals involved, even the bid by Microsoft, would have to be approved by regulatory agencies because of anti-trust concerns. We have all seen how a little bit of money in the right places can fix that. Google had been in talks with Yahoo about having Google run its online advertising business in the past; however in October, Mr. Yang of Yahoo decided against the deal. Talks with Google have resumed on the European front to run Yahoo's ad business in that market segment. The two companies are fierce rivals, but even they know they are banding together in order to stand up against a fellow competitor.

Everyone is aware of the unfair practices of Microsoft and everyone should know that they run smear campaigns against Linux. In a way, Microsoft must feel threatened by the whole Open Source movement and has gone on an offensive to ensure it will keep making money one way or another. Let's be honest – they are obviously not trying to make the best OS on the market. We are not the only ones who see this, and we are not the only ones who are p.o.'d at Microsoft for their unfair practices. Even Google Senior Vice President David Drummond is quoted as saying "now (Microsoft will) attempt to exert the same sort of inappropriate and illegal influence over the Internet that it did with the PC."

My friends, I see a bleak future for Open Source and the Internet if this deal with Microsoft goes anywhere. Eventually, they will start to make more aggressive moves online to push whatever formats they can from Open Source to propitietary. For example, let's say in the future they want to buy Sun Microsystems – what would that mean for MySQL? All these concerns are real, and we must be mindful of them; when we see the enemy at the gates, they often start by knocking beforerunning you down with a Tiger Tank. If they succeed in purchasing Yahoo, they will never stop with just Yahoo; this will be a stepping stone in the heart of Open Source, and we must resist them every step of the way. We must always have the better product; we must always be a dozen steps ahead of the game like we are now. Nothing can stop the Linux movement, but that does not mean they will make it easy for us.

Share your thoughts on the future of Open Source if Yahoo is consumed.
