Dell and Linux: A Blossoming Marriage |

Dell is expanding even further into the Linux market. Dell made the announcement that it will now be selling the Dell XPS 1330n with Ubuntu Linux 7.10 preloaded to customers in the UK, Germany, France, and Spain. This is in addition to the Inspiron 530n PC, which was previously released to those countries. This move comes after it was clear from customer feedback that Linux was in high demand in these countries.
Dell had already made the move to include Ubuntu laptops in its line of computers sold in the U.S. Now, with Dell including Ubuntu laptops in Europe, a lot of heads are turning towards Linux and Dell. What does this mean for Linux and Dell? Dell has not been open enough to disclose how many PCs and Laptops pre-bundled with Ubuntu have been sold in the U.S. and elsewhere, but many are speculating that the numbers must be good enough to encourage Dell to continue selling the Linux computers. The Linux market has had a huge boom in the past few months. The OLPC laptop, the ASUS Eee Laptops, and the Everex PCs and new line of CloudBook laptops have brought a lot of attention to the burgeoning sea of Linux pre-bundled on Desktop PCs and consumer laptops. It's always been difficult to track the number of Linux users in the world, since registration isn't required on Linux distros, nor is it common; one method has been to track Linux usage on websites, but this is highly inaccurate and prone to error. Now, with the number of PCs and laptops pre-installed with Linux, it's becoming more clear how many people are interested in the Linux market; we're starting to see real growing numbers in the consumer Linux market.
