The New Topyli Standard: "This article is a humble opinion piece of a GNOME user who wishes to stop using communication software and just be in touch with people. I want to write mail to, chat with, talk to, and have video conferences with real people without worrying about applications and technology."

Dell LinuxDELL has started to offer Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) in notebooks geared for the home office or small business user starting at only $729 to include all the latest hardware. This is a very positive development and suggests that DELLs Linux computer is a success since they have now expanded the product offering to notebooks. I do disagree with how they label the Linux PCs on DELLs website, they state “For advanced users and tech enthusiasts, we’re happy to offer a new open-source operating system...” Ubuntu is hardly for advanced users and I fear that this kind of labeling while productive may turn away some of the Windows converts with promises that Dell is giving the advanced users what they want. If you want to talk about advanced talk about Gentoo not the friendly easy to use Ubuntu.

One more area where Dell has to improve on is the visibility of the Linux notebooks and PCs on their website. Right now the links to get to those PCs imo seems to be hidden away within the menu and content. It takes a far bit of digging to reach their Open Source PC offerings. I would like to see a Customize with Linux button right next to the Customize with Vista button for every PC and notebook they offer. This would provide every user the option of getting Ubuntu with any of the Dell PCs and would be even a stronger message to the Open Source Community that Dell is truly supporting them in their efforts.

While Dell should be prised for even offering these computers I do still feel they have a lot of work to get done and they need to offer the choice of OS on every PC and notebook not just two of them. Good start Dell! Keep moving forward!
