Sun Microsystems confirmed that they are buying MySQL AB for $1 billion this will naturally put Sun back into the spotlight for sometime. The purchases was sparked by the vast deployment of the MySQL database in the current web economy. If you have a website online chances are its backend is made possible by MySQL.
What will be interesting to see is how exactly Sun plans on using MySQL. They have already mentioned they want to expand the commercial deployment of the software. To me that sounds like Sun is asking “How can we make as much money off of this as we can?” .
"The combination of MySQL and Sun represents an enormous opportunity for users and organizations of all sizes seeking innovation, growth and choice," said Marten Mickos, CEO, MySQL. "Sun's culture and business model complements MySQL's own by sharing the same ideals that we have had since our foundation -- software freedom, online innovation and community and partner participation. We are tremendously excited to work with Sun and the millions of members of the MySQL open source ecosystem to continue to deliver the best database for powering the modern Web economy."
The deal will be made final by the 3rd quarter of 2008 and they still have to seek regulatory approval but there is very little resistance and there are no anti-trust issues which would help to stream line this deal. What remains to be see is what Sun will bring to the table cost wise to MySQL. Only registered users can write comments. Please login or register.
