The ultra sleek, ultra light, ultra mobile CloudBook PC won't be in the clutches of Linux aficionados just yet. Everex made the announcement today that Linux fans will have to wait one more month for the anticipated Linux PC, while the Taiwanese Vendor makes some tweaks to the software. The CloudBook was to be made available today at Wal-Mart Inc. Stores and the walmart.com web site.
The super lightweight Linux Computer runs gOS, a derivative of the fan favorite Ubuntu distribution. The PC runs in at a easy-on-your-wallet cost of $399. The CloudBook sports a seven-inch display, and a reworked user interface that complies nicely with that display. Some bloggers are already assuming the worst, namely that there are driver issues, problems with the hardware, and related issues with the software. All of this worry is merely speculation; there is a greater likelihood that the Chinese New Year is having a greater impact on the CloudBook's delay. February 7th if the first day of the new year, and many Taiwanese and Chinese works take several days or weeks off before and after the holiday. A lot of Linux fans are eagerly awaiting the latest Linux PC to hit the market. With the staggering success of the previous line of Everex PCs, the recent success of the ASUS Eee Laptops, and other companies such as Acer in talks about releasing affordable Linux PCs in the coming months, the end of 2007 and the start of 2008 have already been a huge hit for Linux. This might just be the start of a huge exodus from more expensive, slower PCs to lightweight, cheap Linux PCs that give you a horde of open source software (such as OpenOffice, Firefox, GIMP, Blender, etc) to boot.
