We have been overwhelmed with complaints from some Linux system admins suggesting that we are making Linux administration sound too easy, that there are enough “green” Linux admins in the marketplace right now, and that we do not need anymore. Some even went as far as to say that they are worried about their jobs if someone can install and manage a Linux server by themselves. These same people are creating posts trying to discourage people from administering their own servers. We just had to take a step back and wonder where is all this Linux Admin FUD coming from?
Have you ever been called a noob by some old hardcore Linux System Admin? We have, and we administer many Linux servers and installed and designed all the hardware, but because we offered advice on how we did it, we were somehow crossing the line and should not let greenhorns know about how easy it can be. Personally, we don't see why some of these Admins would feel that way, perhaps they are justifying their jobs to their employer by implying that everything is hard to use. Whatever the reason, these admins feel that they need to protect how they use Linux. I see it as unfounded, since after all Linux at heart is about being Open Source and about the community, not about separating and isolating ourselves like the Microsoft world. We are better than that, and we should help the public and help anyone that wants to try to administer their own server. Why should that be shunned upon? This Fear, Uncertainty, & Doubt, from Linux Admins has to stop if we ever going to deal that final blow to Microsoft and close the curtains on the Windows era.
Perhaps these Admins also enjoyed their celebrity status as being valuable and hard to replace; perhaps some of them are put off by all of the new converts from Windows. One thing is for certain, in this era of the Webmin Admin, there will always be a place for the seasoned Linux Admin, but I must ask why do some of these Admins act as if they don't want anyone else to use Linux?
