Linspire Customized PDF Print E-mail

Linspire LogoOne of the many things that separates Linux from bloated operating systems like Windows is its modular design. Have you ever noticed just how many different distributions there are? Or how easy it seems for people to roll out a new distro customized with the packages and set up that they prefer? Its Linux's module design that makes this possible. Even if systems like Windows were not proprietary and closed, it wouldn't be so easy to roll out your own version of the operating system with just the libraries you want, just the software you want in place with your preferences already set; it's not as easy as defining or excluding some packages; it's not as easy as reworking some lines of code here or there. This doesn't marginalize the intense work that goes into the development of some of the Linux distributions; many of the developers have labored long and hard to customize their desktop, but it doesn't mean that someone with knowledge about Linux's internals couldn't pick up one of these distros and in a few days have a slightly altered version of the desktop with a few of his or her favorite packages in place. This is the idea behind Linspire's new move to offer customized desktops of their Linspire operating system to customers.

Have you ever thought about all of the places Linux has been popping up lately? It's not just in your computer anymore. Linux is powering mobile phones, handheld gaming consoles, GPS systems, e-book readers, and more. Personally, I'm waiting for the Linux refrigerator, the Ubuntu frigidaire, which will be fast, cold, and powerful enough to churn out ice cubes like there's no tomorrow. Unfortunately, this article isn't about the next generation of refrigerators, but it is about another common household electronic device that we use everyday: our television set. Asus, creator of the world popular Eee laptop, has made the announcement that they will be pushing out three new products, one of which is a Linux-powered TV.

China is one of the fastest growing nations on the Earth, and Red Hat Inc. is taking advantage of that fact. Red Hat, the Linux and open-source distributor, is focusing on the continent of Asia, expecting gains of more than 50% in growth. The Linux company is planning on opening up eight new testing centers in China in the next six months in order to capture revenue growth. Open Source and Linux are gaining huge grounds all over the world; it might be at the United States' detriment that its North Carolina-based company is focusing so heavily on the Chinese market.
