  I was delighted this morning to read an article entitled, “Vista SP1: Still Lagging behind the Linux desktop.” I'll explain why I was delighted. Despite what others might think, it isn't that satisfying to know how terrible Windows Vista is. I'm no fan of Microsoft, but I think in an ideal world, Microsoft would still exist; they just wouldn't control the market. Why I was delighted was because this article cut to the chase and remarked how Vista is way behind Linux. So many other articles I've read dwell on the fact that a lot of computer users want to extend the Windows XP licensing, are waiting for Windows 7 to make the change, that Vista doesn't compare to its predecessor. Well, I can tell you that personally I never liked Windows XP, never liked Windows 98 or Windows 95, and that when Linux came into its own and became a mature operating system, I wasn't about to stick with Windows any longer. What people should be saying is “what else is out there that's new and better than Vista” instead of “how much longer can I continue to use this dinosaur operating system called Windows XP.”

 Add another once Windows-only PC distributor to the Linux hit list. Thanks to the new Asus Eee Laptop, Best Buy, the Richfield, Minnesota based corporation, is selling Linux on their website (you can check out the web page here). In 2007, Asus sold over 300,000 copies of the Linux laptop, and they're predicting that they will sell several million more this year. The lightweight laptop featuring a solid state drive has become a darling of the subnotebook market; with a 7-inch display, 512 mb of memory and the Linux Xandros operating system, the Eee is popping up everywhere.  More than a month ago, I wrote an article entitled, "The Buzz Word Today Is Green." Well, with the political climate the way it is in the United States, I think it's more accurate that today's buzz word is "change." People are looking for change, looking for anything they can do to change the world, to make it a better place. Maybe that's one of the reasons Linux has taken off in the last year; maybe it's the people's hunger for change that's driving companies like Dell and Sears to package Linux integrated computers. It might be that people are growing tired of expensive proprietary software that never works, provides poor support, is devoid of expansive, contributing communities, forces them to purchase new hardware sooner than they would like, and forces them to wait years between releases.

We have been overwhelmed with complaints from some Linux system admins suggesting that we are making Linux administration sound too easy, that there are enough “green” Linux admins in the marketplace right now, and that we do not need anymore. Some even went as far as to say that they are worried about their jobs if someone can install and manage a Linux server by themselves. These same people are creating posts trying to discourage people from administering their own servers. We just had to take a step back and wonder where is all this Linux Admin FUD coming from?
